The Week That Was #16
March 1st to March 7th, 2026
Welcome to this week’s edition of The Week That Was, a collection of images that I’ve taken the previous week.
You may find that this post is too long for you to read in your email. So, to see it in all of its glory, you might have to view it in your browser or via the Substack app.
Finally, it’s starting to feel as though the weather is changing and Spring is knocking at the door. Wednesday was a particularly lovely day with blue skies, sunshine and some much welcomed warm air. The perfect day for an afternoon walk through High Park with my camera.
On the way to the park, I spotted this old wasp’s nest high in a tree. These nests are a remarkable example of insect ingenuity, design and construction. All made with chewed up wood and saliva, plus a lot of hard graft. Amazing.
While walking around the park, I came to a couple of tall tree stumps where someone had laid out bird seed. On one stump was a little red squirrel. The red ones are much smaller than the more common black and grey ones but what they lack for in size they more than make up for in feistiness. They are very territorial and very vocal. Actually, belligerent would be a good way to describe them. When it didn’t have food in its mouth, this one was constantly chattering and whenever another squirrel, regardless of size, tried to get to the food it was chased away post haste. Interestingly, my presence didn’t seem to bother it and I was able to get quite close without it being concerned.
Also hanging around the stump hoping to be able to snag some seeds were a Chickadee and a female Northern Cardinal. Once again, they weren’t too concerned by my presence which enabled me to get a couple of decent photos.
Unfortunately, I didn’t come across any discarded toilets this week but I did find this interestingly placed glove by the still frozen pond.
On Thursday, I went on a photowalk with my good friend and neighbour, Marcello Mancuso. We started our walk off at Union Station, Toronto’s main transit hub. Here’s a few images from the main hall. Although it looks pretty quiet here, downstairs, where the platforms and the large foodcourt are located, it’s very busy.
Outside the station is this bull statue, reminiscent of the other famous bull statue on New York’s Wall Street. This one’s located in front of a steak restaurant called Blue Bovine which is partly owned by Canadian businessman Kevin O’Leary, aka Mr. Wonderful of Shark Tank fame (he’s also in the new movie Marty Supreme). For the uninitiated, O’Leary could be described as being as belligerent as that little red squirrel but nowhere near as cute.
Then there’s this cow. It’s one of a herd of seven located in the Toronto-Dominion Centre
Finally, on Saturday down by the lakeshore, I came across these two Mute swans gliding through the rapidly thawing ice floes.
That’s all for now, folks. Hope you have a great week.

That glove and that nest are so cool Mark. Great sighting!!!
TWO great series, Mark. It’s always a great pleasure to walk and shoot with you. The cardinal is my favourite.
